Studer Trust English Online Course
In prior articles, we’ve shared reports of how our standard Teacher Training Center (TTC) courses [links] have been adapted to online modules to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions and make sure our teachers and communities are safe. With each training, we’ve learned more and more about how to effectively bring in tools and methodologies to best cater a digital learning experience. As of October, Myanmar was in the midst of a second wave of COVID-19 cases, and we therefore had to develop a curriculum online for our English course as well. Our goal was to help graduates of our English Teacher Training deepen and expand their knowledge, and we chose to use Rosetta Stone as the resource to help us do so digitally.
23 participants were a part of the training which began in October and lasted nine weeks. Throughout the course, TTC provided the Rosetta Stone application to all attendees. This was supported by twice-weekly conversation groups, divided by English level, in which participants had open-form conversations to provide for a personalized and accessible learning environment. Students then also followed up each group with a journal entry. After all weekly assignments were completed, the trainers conducted a weekly review session to address pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure, and formulated exercises according to the common weak points. Trainees were assessed three times throughout the course—a pretest, and interim evaluation, and a final exam. All aforementioned tests were generated by the Rosetta Stone application.
As a result of the training, 70% of participants advanced at least one level up in their Common European Framework of Reference for Languages exams, and all students showed a marked improvement in their assessments. Most excitingly, all trainees invested time into learning the and using the Rosetta Stone platform from a minimum of 170 hours to some students using it 600 hours throughout the duration of the course. For this reason we see value in Rosetta Stone as a tool, whether or not COVID-19 restrictions are in place, and we plan on integrating it into future English curriculums. “All activities are good because they all are linked each other to improve our English skills. There they all should be used as they are in the next trainings.”
“I improved vocabularies, pronunciation, listening, and grammar and so on by doing the Rosetta stone lessons. I could guess the correct answer by looking at the picture in listening part. I also found out some teaching techniques in the app.”
“Because of Conversation practice, I am not afraid of speaking English and being corrected our mistakes, I came to know my weaknesses and I could expend the conversation by using the language guide.”
“Due to the lessons from Conversation and Free Conversation Practices, I could speak English confidently. As the trainers correct my mistakes while practicing, It’s more flexible to speak English. I also learnt new sentence structures and new vocabularies.”
“The most I like from this course is that the trainers support and help us from all rounds and teach us punctually according to the timetable. They are really admirable.”
Ultimately, this pilot taught us a lot about how to create more dynamic, personalized and effective learning experiences.
