Teacher Profile: Zu Zu Aung Ko Ko

Zu Zu Aung Ko Ko has dreamt of being a teacher from a young age. She was in large part inspired by her mother who is also a teacher and her biggest role model. Zu Zu currently teaches at Kay Gyi Kone Monastic School near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second biggest city. In her free time, she also follows in the creative footsteps of her father, an artist, and enjoys painting, sewing and singing. After completing some of the basic Studer Trust Teacher Training Center’s (TTC) programs, she identified English as one of her weaker skills that she wanted to improve. So when Studer Trust offered an English Online Course (EOC), she jumped at the opportunity.

English had always been a struggle for Zu Zu throughout her education. She often got the lowest of her scores in this area, and her English teachers avoided asking her questions as they knew she wasn’t able to answer. These experiences caused her to feel embarrassed and guilty. With this in mind, she found the motivation to work hard and improve her English.

Having taken her first TTC course with Studer Trust, she felt immediately comfortable as she had never experienced such a safe and secure learning space. She saw the teachers as her role models and also admired their ability to speak English, giving her confidence in the programming. This encouraged her to sign up for the EOC, using the Rosetta Stone curriculum, despite initial fears about her ability to complete the program.

There were many obstacles along the journey for Zu Zu, which she faced head-on. As the main source of income for her family, she had to carve out times in her already busy day to participate in courses and complete homework. She was also placed in an advanced group that she initially wasn’t prepared for. However, despite the challenges, she prevailed through extremely engaged participation and rigorous and determined after-hours studying. Zu Zu was deemed one of the most vocal students in her courses, and engaged in 3 hours of nightly studying. Specifically, with the help of the Rosetta Stone application, she was able to identify certain hard-to-pronounce words that she practiced over 100 times in order to perfect.

In the end, Zu Zu completed and took the exams on units 1-20 of the Rosetta Stone application in order to ultimately get 100% on all of them. As one of the youngest teachers in her school, this, along with other TTC programs, has helped her gain the recognition and trust of parents and has also helped her adjust her mindset and philosophy around teaching practices in general. Studer Trust is proud and excited to see her succeed in her career as a professional teacher and to continue to provider her opportunities to grow and improve.
